Gyeongsangbuk-do is bordered by the pristine East Coast to the east, Gangwon Province to the north, Chungcheongbuk-do to the west, and Gyeongnam and Ulsan to the south. The bio-industry of Gyeongsangbuk-do is emerging as a hub of advanced biotechnology: in the eastern region centered on Pohang, efforts are underway to establish a green bio-industry that converges with cutting-edge science and technology, as well as a structure-based new drug cluster. In the northern region centered on Andong, a next-generation vaccine business cluster is being developed; in the southern region centered on Gyeongsan, a beauty industry hub is being created; and in the central region centered on Uiseong, the cell culture industry is being fostered.

Going beyond its identity as a city steeped in rich history and traditional culture, Andong has emerged as a core hub driving the innovative growth of South Korea’s bio and vaccine industries.

Starting with the establishment of leading companies such as SK bioscience and SK plasma, the city has successfully built a robust academy-industry-research-government infrastructure, which includes the Animal Cell Validation Next Generation Center (AVC) and the Gyeongbuk Institute for Bioindustry (GIB).

In particular, with the recent passing of the preliminary feasibility study for the ‘Andong Bio-Life National Industrial Complex,’ the city is rapidly leaping forward as a global hub for biopharmaceuticals, medical cannabis (HEMP), and natural materials.
